A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006)

  • A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006)
Writer-director Dito Montiel’s bleak coming-of-age story gives Tatum a chance to flex his serious acting muscles opposite more seasoned pros like Shia LeBeouf and Robert Downey, Jr. Tatum is more than up for the challenge that the emotionally raw Young Antonio offers, requiring the actor to go to some very dark, very vulnerable, places in a film about growing up in New York state surrounded by the type of friends who either end up dying or wishing they were dead. The young actor’s performance is full of unformed talent in need of the right director to give it shape, but Tatum’s unflinching commitment to the gritty subject is one of this uneven film’s better attributes.
