Royals Descend Upon Amsterdam In Their Finest Diamonds
Queen Maxima wore the Mellerio sapphire tiara, a gift from her mother-in-law, Queen Beatrix. According to HELLO!, the tiara is made up of 655 South African diamonds and 33 Kashmir sapphires, set in platinum by Parisian jeweler Mellerio. King Willem III of the Netherlands first purchased the tiara for his wife, Queen Emma in 1881. It was passed down through the family to Beatrix, who abdicated in favor of her eldest son, Willem Alexander on April 30th, 2013.
