As if Richard Linklater’s stylishly animated adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s novel wasn’t trippy enough, queue up the film’s centerpiece drug: Substance D. Often referred to as “The Slow Death,” the drug causes both halves of the brain to war with themselves, causing a series of horrifying hallucinations. Fortunately, these effects are where the film excels, offering up a visual spectacle of bizarrely twisted animation in a ridiculously visual feast.
