Slap Shot (1977)
The aforementioned Goon owes a great debt to Slap Shot, widely considered the best hockey ever made. Helmed by George Roy Hill, director of The Sting, this re-teaming with actor Paul Newman was considered unusually violent for a sports comedy back in 1977 and still seems especially brutal even today. The story of a rag-tag team that valued strength over strategy, Slap Shot still holds up as great movie-watching experience.
