2012 Year in Review: Best Female Movie Performances
Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty sacrifices traditional evocations of emotion for a tense procedural centered on the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. But what emotional resonance the film does make time for comes from Chastain’s fierce performance. As Maya, the CIA’s point person for the manhunt, a decade of false leads and close calls creases her face, and Chastain effortlessly sells the burden her character must endure; the consequences of serving justice in a war that ends with no monuments, only casualties.
