The Brat Pack Turns 50
Back in the '80s: The son of cult movie director Robert Downey Sr., Robert Downey Jr. was considered an associate Brat Packer for having worked frequently alongside the others throughout the mid'80s. He appeared opposite Anthony Michael Hall in Weird Science in 1985, the same year that both became sketch players for a season on Saturday Night Live. He co-starred with Molly Ringwald in The Pick-Up Artist (his first lead role), with longtime roommate Kiefer Sutherland in 1969, and with Jami Gertz and Andrew McCarthy in Less Than Zero. Playing a self-destructive, hard-partying drug addict in that film, he later called his role "the Ghost of Christmas Future" for the way it presaged his downward spiral over the next 15 years.
