Fisher has struggled with bipolar disorder as well as an addiction to drugs and alcohol, all of which she has discussed publicly in her books Wishful Drinking and Shockaholic as well as a one-woman play also called Wishful Drinking. In addition to writing of her own, Fisher has been called one of the top script doctors in Hollywood, fixing the scripts of The Wedding Singer, Sister Act and others. In 1991, Meryl Streep was nominated for an Academy Award playing Fisher's mother in the film version of Fisher's semi-autobiographical novel Postcards from the Edge. Fisher has hinted that she'll be returning to the universe of Star Wars in upcoming movies, including saying that Disney (who now owns the rights to the franchise) has been sending a trainer to her house.
