Sarah Palin's a Grandmother

on Dec. 30, 2008 10:20 AM / 1 Comment

Sarah Palin may not have ascended to the second-highest office in the country, but the Alaskan governor has plenty to rejoice about today.

People magazine reports that the former vice presidential candidate's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol Palin, gave birth to a son, Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston, at 5:30 Saturday morning.

The younger Palin threw a baby-shaped monkey wrench into the 2008 Presidential campaign in September, when news broke that the new mother, then 17 and unmarried, was pregnant by her older boyfriend, Levi Johnston. The revelation came after speculation that Bristol was the actual birth mother of Sarah Palin's newborn son, Trig.

The new arrival was born in Palmer, Alaska, and weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces at the time of birth. Johnston, and Bristol, who have been dating for three years, are expected to marry sometime next year.

Johnston is currently an apprentice electrician studying for his license, while Bristol is completing her high-school education through correspondence courses.

"The baby is fine and Bristol is doing well," said Colleen Jones, the sister of Bristol's grandmother, Sally Heath. "Everyone is excited."

Excited, perhaps, but not particularly talkative. Bill McAllister, a spokesman for Governor Palin, 44, stated on Monday, "This office will not be issuing any statements on [Bristol's baby]. We’re here to talk about state government and that matter falls outside of that."

As for Levi Johnston's mother, Sherry Johnston, she's probably celebrating in her own way.

Congratulations to all involved!
