Shanna Moakler Resigns Miss USA Post in Protest

May 13, 2009 at 2:00pm

People magazine reports that former Miss USA Shanna Moakler resigned from her post as co-director of the Miss California USA organization on Wednesday, in protest over Tuesday’s decision by Donald Trump to let the current Miss California, Carrie Prejean, retain her crown.

Prejean was in danger of being dethroned because of topless photos that she had posed for and which were recently leaked onto the Internet, but Moakler’s beef with Prejean is her stance on gay marriage. During the Miss USA pageant in April, Prejean professed that she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman.

“I cannot with a clear conscience move forward supporting and promoting the Miss Universe Organization when I no longer believe in it,” Moakler stated on Wednesday. “This was a very sad decision for me. I stayed up all night trying to make the right decision.”

This is the second about-face on the subject for Moakler. In late April, responding to Prejean’s statement, she filmed an ad blasting the California anti-gay marriage initiative Proposition 8 with former Miss California contestants Raquel Beezly and Tamiko Nash. But then, yesterday, Moakler pledged to support Prejean.

Well, it’s often been said that it’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind. Presumably, that even applies to Shanna Moakler.
