Shia LaBeouf, 22, has signed on to star in an adaption of John Grisham's legal thriller The Associate.
Variety reports that The Departed screenwriter William Monahan will pen the screenplay, and LaBeouf will star as a Yale Law School student who is blackmailed into joining a law firm that is working on a multibillion-dollar lawsuit.
LaBeouf reportedly hit upon starring in a film adaption of the novel while working (with a busted paw) on the upcoming Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Legal intrigue in the courtroom will probably be a little more sedate than battling highway-devouring robots from outer space.
LaBeouf is also branching out behind the camera these days—he recently helmed a video shoot for his favorite band Rumspringa.
And to think, just a couple of years ago he was Even Steven.

Looking forward to it.
Uh "The Rainmaker," anyone? Grisham mania rip off.
Isn't he a little short to be legal counsel? And young? Who is going to want Lizzie McGuire representing them on a murder rap?
Who cares if it's a 'Rainmaker" rip off. I'll watch ANYTHANG w/Shia in it, plus Rainmaker was a kickass flick, Grisham is awesome. Shia and Grisham? I smell a blockbuster hit here....
love you, Shia..........
John Grisham wrote The Rainmaker and The Associate so how can he be ripping off himself??
On no they trying to turn him into Cruise or a Damon! It's worst than I thought! I thought he could he at least could pull a Harrison Ford! Shia ruuuuuuuuuuun! Damn man I don't want to see him go out like that!
