The US gymnastics team did incredibly well during their stay in Beijing, and this week’s issue has exclusive stories from the amazing athletes themselves.
All around gold medal winner Nastia Liukin admits that only months ago she was on the verge of quitting the sport. Gymnastics is tough on a young woman’s body, but her father and coach, who won 4 medals in the 1988 Olympics, got her back on track. Nastia can’t wait to get back home to Texas, where she’ll continue her studies at Southern Methodist University.
The team’s captain, Alicia Sacramone, might have fallen off the beam during the ever-important team competition, but she’s still thrilled about her performance in China. Her plans now include finishing up with her schoolwork at Brown University, then eventually starting her own fashion line.
Shawn Johnson is cute as can be and only 4’9. But that didn’t stop her from grabbing the silver medal in the all-around competition, and placing first in floor! The 16-year-old plans to tour with her fellow Olympians when she gets home, and finishing off her last year of high school.
