Trend Spotting With Kim Kardashian: Knit Picking

Nov 12, 2008 at 7:59am

It’s getting chilly outside; so now is the time to rediscover your soft spot for sweaters! Knit shawls, vests, hats, scarves, skirts, dresses and tops: It’s all about adding some unconventional knitted threads to your cool-season closet this year!

Judging by what I have seen on the runway and my recent celebrity sightings, knits are not just for the upper torso—they are being worn all sorts of ways.

I recently wrote about how in love with scarves I am right now. They are functional, chic and can be used to pump up an outfit or dial it back for a walk-in-the-countryside look, like Katie Holmes has done.

This year’s sweaters are also coming in various lengths and styles. Short-sleeved knits can be warmed up with a long sleeve shirt underneath, as seen here on Jennifer Garner. Selena Gomez shortens the sleeves on her simple-yet-cute cardigan as does British singer Estelle, who appears to like more length in her sweater.

Knits are also being used for jackets this season, utilizing—and don’t freak out about this—shoulder pads! These are not your bulky, three-story pads of the ’80s, but more of a subtle tool to add structure to the sweater.

No matter what outfit you’re wearing this fall and winter, I challenge you to figure out a way to incorporate some knit accents.  Or even opt to pile on the knits, making sure to mix up the colors and patterns. Being too matchy will date and de-style your look.

Your knit-picker,

Kim ;)
