Summit Entertainment's Twilight opened this past weekend and shattered box office expectations with a whopping $70.6 million take. The film's production budget was $37 million.
Robert Pattinson, 22, pictured here arriving at New York City's JFK airport on Sunday, can expect the grueling promotional trail to stretch on and on.
Box Office Mojo notes that Twilight boasted the fourth best November opening ever, coming in behind three of the Harry Potter films.
Twilight has also set a record as the highest-grossing debut weekend for a female-directed film. Catherine Hardwicke, 53, who lensed the vampire flick, has now beat Mimi Leder's previous record of an initial $41.2 million intake for 1998's Deep Impact.
Needless to say, Summit officially announced on Friday that New Moon, the first follow-up to Twilight, will be going into production shortly.

I was hesitant about the movie, and thoroughly disappointed. Someone over at Summit thought of teen girls and stopped there! The movie was okay but if you have read the series it lacked everything that made me adore Edward & Bella. Hopefully 'New Moon' will show non-Twilighters what makes us all thirst for more! Summit needs to kick it up a notch and show us on screen why the pages of a book kept us thirsting for more! In my opinion the movie failed to capture Edward and Bella's blossoming love! I think the cast was perfect and if TPTB over at Summit would have done their research they would have realized that a longer film with why we love this couple to begin with would have done wonders! Personally, I was upset with the patch of grass that was supposed to be Edward's glorious meadow, we were all cheated as to just what the meadow meant in the stages of their love! No to mention being cheated of the little things that make Edward & Be4lla... him watching her sleep, hum her to sleep, her confession of love while sleeping, his profession of loving her in return, what happened to the developing friendship with Alice, I didn't mean for this to turn into a rant...
I really do appreciate the cast and hopefully the movies to come will give all ages what we thirst for, character development, and not just a movie lacking in dialogue!
