‘American Idol’ Judge Nicki Minaj on Working With Mariah Carey: ‘We Don’t Have a Problem’ (VIDEO)
“We’re great,” Minaj told reporters at the American Idol press event in Northridge, Calif., on Wednesday. “We’re having a lot of fun up there on that panel… No one is here trying to be bigger and better than anyone else. We have a job, and it’s actually something that we’re having fun doing, so we don’t have a problem.”
Minaj then shifted the focus to the contestants. “We really care about the contestants, and we take pride in this job that we’ve been given,” she added.
As for how Minaj and Carey work alongside fellow judges Keith Urban and Randy Jackson, the rapper said the chemistry between the four judges couldn’t be more dynamic. “We have a really great rhythm,” she said.
“We’ve been given a big job,” she said. “America takes American Idol seriously, so we have to as well. And we’re having fun. I think at the end of the day, the fact that I’m able to laugh a lot on the panel, that’s all that matters. I’m able to have fun and not sit up there and be all serious.”
The “Starships” hitmaker also promised a lot of “acoustic kids” and “great soul singers” this season. “I’ve been impressed by some of the country vocals as well,” she added. “It’s going to be a very intense competition, because they’re very good.”
The new season of American Idol premieres Wednesday, Jan. 16. on FOX.
