Clearly, tension was already high on Thursday’s double elimination episode of FOX’s The X Factor. So, leave it to executive producer and judge Simon Cowell to make things even more awkward.

Note: Spoilers ahead if you didn’t watch Thursday’s elimination episode.

With Jennel Garcia and Paige Thomas on the chopping block, Cowell refused to announce his decision – after Britney Spears and L.A. Reid voted to eliminate Garcia – until Demi Lovato revealed her pick first.

“Well, I knew I was going to save Paige, so [Demi] wouldn’t have to make a decision,” Cowell tells Celebuzz after the show. “And I thought, ‘You’re not going to get away with this. I want to hear who you want to save.’ And, I think everyone at home was thinking the same thing.”

Host Mario Lopez tried his best to get Simon to move forward with revealing his choice, but lost that battle. “Yeah, [Mario] was sweating a bit,” Cowell, 53, laughs. “But, he was cool. He dealt with it very well.”

But, what did Lovato think of Simon’s antics? “I think that Simon is just a mean-spirited guy. Love him to death, but he just is.” the 20-year-old pop star tells us.

In the end, Lovato threw her elimination vote to Thomas and Cowell closed the deal on Garcia’s elimination.
