Call her crazy—just be sure you call her. Could that be the method to Paula Abdul's seeming madness? After yet another night of her addled American Idol antics, wherein she judged contestant Jason Castro's tune even before he had sung it, the wackmeister came out swinging to defend her behavior.

First there was a stop on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show that only complicated the matter—some circular reasoning about seeing Castro in rehearsal, being suddenly asked to write down comments, mixing Jason up with David Cook, yada-yada-yada.

There was a slew of TV-mag up-close-and-personal sharing snippets, all with more of the same head-scratching allegory.

Idol producers even sliced out some valuable time to excuse her behavior:
