Was Kanye West's Album Cover Banned?
Is Kanye West's latest album cover too hot for the USA? According to the rapper, the album covert art for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy has been "banned" for a tiny painting that shows a naked woman's torso.
Kanye tweeted the cover to fans over his ever-popular Twitter feed, writing: "Banned in the USA!!!!" The outspoken entertainer added that "they don't want me chilling on the couch with my phoenix!"
The cover features a small painting of what looks like a nude Kanye with a monster sitting on his lap. The monster (which Kanye calls his "phoenix") features a nude woman's torso with wings, jaws and a polka dot tail.
In a series of later tweets, Kanye said that he wants to "sell albums but not at the expense of [his] true creativity." He also hinted that the problem could stem from Wal-Mart not agreeing to sell the album with the risque cover.
"In all honesty....I really don't be thinking about Wal-Mart when I make my music or album cover," Kanye tweeted.
But there's still hope for Kanye: The Los Angeles Times reports that the cover is not banned but Kanye was urged by his record label to use alternate art. However, if Kanye wishes to use the original album art he was allegedly told that "the label would stand behind him."
Controversial album covers are nothing new to the music biz. The Black Crowes had to alter their album art for their album, Amorica, in 1994. Bands from The Beatles to Bow Wow Wow have also had to change their covers to appease their labels.
