Winona Ryder Was Flying High

on Nov. 20, 2008 11:19 AM / 1 Comment

The mystery of Winona Ryder's midair medical emergency has been solved. The secret ingredient? Xanax, according to British newspaper the Sun.

The 37-year-old actress was rushed to Hillingdon Hospital on Wednesday after she collapsed twice on her L.A.-to-London British Airlines flight.  The pilot arranged a 11:13 a.m. priority landing at Heathrow Airport.

At the time, Ryder's mouthpiece, Mara Buxbaum, said that the hospital visit—the actress was quickly released—was a mere precaution.

Now, according to the paper, Ryder—who checked into the hospital under a pseudonym—had her stomach pumped at the hospital.  Apparently she had taken an overdose of the prescription drug Xanax, which is commonly used to treat anxiety.

A passenger on Ryder's flight said the actress "turned a deathly shade of pale" during the trip. "It was scary."

Ryder has a history of trouble with prescription drugs. During her 2001 shoplifting arrest at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, the Dracula veteran was found to be in possession of the painkiller Oxycodone, which she later claimed had left her in a "confused" state.

Ryder took another British Airlines flight last night, presumably without incident.
