Zac Efron Is About to Get ‘Footloose’

Good thing Zac Efron has been getting in so much running practiceVariety reports that a Footloose remake starring the High School Musical hunk has been placed on the fast track.

Apparently, after High School Musical 3 came in at Number 1 at the box office over the weekend, raking in $42 million, execs couldn’t wait to hop on the Zac train.  The remake is expected to begin production next spring.

The film will be a retelling of the 1984 Kevin Bacon vehicle about a boy who breaks down a small town’s restrictive attitude through the power of dance (sigh…). No word on how the studio will revamp the story to reflect modern times.

Directed by HSM helmsman Kenny Ortega, the picture will be produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago, Hairspray), with a script written by Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist director Peter Sollett.

The deal for the film, which will be aimed at a more mature demographic than the High School Musical series, gives Efron script approval.

So he may finally be able to bare himself in the manner that he’s been hoping to.
