Zac Efron’s Quest for a New Image

As he continues to put his High School Musical past further behind him, 17 Again star Zac Efron appears to be making a bid for action-adventure stardom.

Efron, who bowed out of the upcoming Footloose remake because he doesn’t want to be stereotyped as a musical actor, is reportedly mulling a couple of projects far removed from his singing-cinema origins.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Efron is in the running to star in a big-screen adaptation of Jonny Quest, a sci-fi adventure cartoon about a boy who accompanies his scientist father on hair-raising adventures. Given that the original character was 11 years old—a decade younger than Efron—the premise might require some tinkering, but the project appears to be off and running. Former wrestler Dwayne Johnson is also rumored to be considering a part, in the role of Quest’s bodyguard, Roger T. “Race” Bannon.

British movie magazine Empire, meanwhile, reports that Efron is also mulling the lead role in a live-action version of Full Metal Panic, a series of Japanese novels about an anti-terrorist mercenary tasked with protecting a schoolgirl from an organization of baddies.

Oh yeah, and he’s aided in his mission by a gang of robots.

That’s a long way from belting out “We’re All in This Together.”

Have your say in the comments section: Do you think Zac could successfully pull off action-adventure roles?

BELL, Calif. — When thieves broke into the high school music room here this week, they cut through the bolts on all the storage lockers and ripped two doors off their frames. But they didn’t touch the computer or the projector or even the trumpets.
