In what might come as a shock for some punk rock enthusiasts, Against Me! singer Tom Gabel has come out that he is transgender and revealed to Rolling Stone magazine that he’ll undergo the gender transition process shortly.
The rocker admitted that he has struggled with gender dysphoria for some time, and is finally doing something about it. Tom and his wife Heather will stay together, which comes as a relief to the musician, who told the magazine,
“For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news. But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”
Tom has even decided on a new name.
He will now be Laura Jane Grace. “I’m going to have embarrassing moments, and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
Another celebrity to come about being transgender was Cher‘s child Chaz Bono. He was recently on Dancing with the Stars and has been an ambassador for the transgender community. Celebuzz has reached out to Chaz for a comment on Tom’s news.
Absolute Punk editor Jason Tate said of the rocker’s announcement, “[I’ve] been a fan for about five years, and follow his music pretty extensively. The song ‘The Ocean’ alludes to his feelings on this.”
The Against Me! lyrics Jason is referring to read in part:
And if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman
My mother once told me she would have named me Laura
I’d grow up to be strong and beautiful like her
One day, I’d find an honest man to make my husband
We would have two children, build our home on the Gulf of Mexico
Our family would spend hot summer days at the beach together
The sun would kiss our skin as we played in the sand and water
And we would know we loved each other without having to say it
