Move over, Katharine McPhee — there’s another starlet gunning for the Smash spotlight!
McPhee’s fellow American Idol alum Jennifer Hudson is set to join the cast of the hit NBC show for its second season in a multi-episode run, the network confirmed to Celebuzz on Friday.
How will Hudson, 30, fit into the show?
The Oscar-winning Dreamgirls actress will play Veronica Moore, a Tony Award-winning Broadway star who will shake things up for competing Marilyn Monores Karen (McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty).
“First Dreamgirls now Smash. I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC,” said executive producer Steven Spielberg. “It’s wonderful to be reunited with her at DreamWorks Television and NBC.”
Hudson won numerous accolades with her powerful feature film debut in 2006’s Dreamgirls, including both a Golden Globe and Academy Award for her portrayal of Dreamette singer Effie White.
Since then, Hudson appeared in supporting roles in films like Sex and the City and The Three Stooges — dedicating her full time to her two-year-old son, David Daniel Otunga Jr.
