The Dark Knight Rises hit theaters Friday as the twelfth Batman flick to debut on the big screen.

The cast includes Tom Hardy as the new villain, Bane, Les Miserables actress Anne Hathaway as the one-and-only Catwoman — and of course — Christian Bale as the dark knight himself, Batman.

As the sequel to ‘The Dark Knight’ this premiere is sure to be a bang at the box-office.

What other comic books have hit the big screen?

Batman isn’t the first comic book to be transformed into a blockbuster.

Many of the films that create opening-day buzz — those movies that just have to be seen at the stroke of midnight — are actually originated from comic books.

Such action movies include The Amazing Spiderman featuring Andrew Garfield, Thor starring Aussie Chris Hemsworth, and The Avengers spotlighting the sexy Scarlett Johansson.

Although The Dark Knight Rises is arguably the most anticipated movie of the summer, it opens Friday on a somber note.

During a midnight showing Thursday in Aurora, Colo., a masked gunman carrying three weapons opened fire on the audience, killing at least 12 people and injuring at least 38 others, according to TheNew York Times.

The gunman, believed to be 24 years of age, has been identified as James Holmes.
