After weeks of speculation, Lionsgate has officially announced that Sam Claflin is set to star as Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
The ever charismatic and clever District 4 tribute teams up with Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), among others, in a bid to survive the 75th Annual Hunger Games, or Quarter Quell.
Claflin previously hit the big screen in Snow White and the Huntsman and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
With filming of the blockbuster sequel scheduled to start in September, the ‘Catching Fire’ cast has been filling up feverishly over the past few weeks.
Last week, Stephanie Leigh was tapped as District 1 tribute Cashmere, and Maria Howell was cast as Seeder, a District 11 victor.
The week prior, four cast slots were filled. E. Roger Mitchell will star as Chaff, Seeder’s fellow District 11 tribute, while Smallville actor Alan Ritchson was named as Gloss, a former Career tribute from District 1. If that wasn’t enough, Bruno Gunn will star as muscle man Brutus, a former District 2 victor who returns to the arena.
Also cast was Meta Golding, who will play fierce golden-fanged Enobaria, the other District 2 tribute who is known for the brutal way she came to win the Games.
The newcomers join returning principals Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen), Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark), Liam Hemsworth (Gale Hawthorne), Elizabeth Banks (Effie Trinket), Woody Harrelson (Haymitch Abernathy), Lenny Kravtiz (Cinna) and Stanley Tucci (Caesar Flickerman).
The Francis Lawrence-helmed Hunger Games sequel, a Lionsgate production based on the second book in the Suzanne Collins trilogy, is expected to start shooting next month and is due in theaters November 22, 2013.
The story sees Katniss and Peeta returning home victorious after winning the gladiatorial games, only to be called back into action.
