After Payne shaved his head post-breakup, fellow heartthrob Harry Styles has gotten inked — again. In a photo posted on a Twitter account managed by One Direction fans, the 18-year-old can be seen showing off fresh tattoos all over his left arm and upper left ribcage. And yes, he is shirtless in the snap.
What new designs did Styles get, and what is the meaning behind one of the new tattoos?
Styles’ existing tattoo collection includes a tiny “A” in the crook of his elbow, a large star on his inner arm and the words “Won’t stop ‘till we surrender” — lyrics from The Temper Trap’s song “Sweet Disposition.”
The collection has since grown, with new additions like a filled black star, an iced gem, his sister Gemma’s name in Hebrew, a pair of comedy and tragedy drama masks, a birdcage and the letters “SMCL.”
Styles’ new tattoo photo has caused some debate between One Direction fans, who have been trying to figure out the meaning behind “SMCL” on Twitter and beyond.
Some believe that the letters stand for “Smile more, cry later,” while other One Directioners have made a connection between the tattoo and Simon Cowell, who first signed the group in early 2011 after being formed on The X Factor.
