Devoid of the Iron Man franchise’s signature humor, the trailer instead showcases a vulnerable Tony Stark (Downey) as he attempts to pick up the pieces left by The Avengers.
“Nothing’s been the same since New York,” he says. “I can’t sleep. And when I do, I have nightmares.”
Even when he’s awake, Stark appears to have his fair share of dark times ahead of him.
Among the many: his arch-nemesis Mandarin, who looks to be played to chilling effect by Oscar-winning icon Ben Kingsley.
Also along for the ride are the franchise’s familiar faces, James Rhodes/War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), who will hopefully steer Stark from any clear and present danger.
Iron Man 3 — which reteams Downey with his Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang director Shane Black — hits theaters in April 2013. Watch the full trailer, above.
