It’s been a long and winding road for Mariah Carey‘s 14th album, which she began working on in 2010, but after being pushed back once again just last week, we might finally get to listen to it soon… we just don’t know exactly when. Carey is planning a Beyoncé-style surprise release, she tells Billboard.
While Carey herself doesn’t specifically mention Beyoncé by name, this is what’s happening. Carey says she’ll announce the album’s name, track listing, artwork and music all at once. “I have to be the one that announces this, especially the title,” she says.
But is it really “pulling a Beyoncé” if you tell everyone first?
In the interview, Carey also talks about the string of failed singles she’s so far released in anticipation of the album and where she went for inspiration.
After immersing herself in her own catalog (“a friend of mine made me a playlist with 1,000 of my songs on it called ‘The Ultimate MC Audio Collection,'” she says), Carey explored her feel-good, hip-hop/R&B side as well as her more introspective moments that could give her fans the best of all worlds.
Only Mariah Carey could cite herself as the inspiration for her next album.
