CBS announced Wednesday that James Van Der Beek will stay with the network and star in the upcoming CSI spinoff CSI: Cyber.

The 37-year-old actor will join Patricia Arquette on the show, playing an FBI agent who has a background in battlefield forensics. Arquette portrays special agent Avery Ryan, head of the Cyber Crime Division.

Van Der Beek, who most recently appeared on the short-lived series Friends with Better Lives, made his own announcement on Twitter:


CSI: Cyber is the fourth series from the CSI franchise. CSI: Miami wrapped in 2012 after 10 seasons while CSI: NY bid adieu last year after nine seasons. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was renewed for a 15th season this past spring.

CSI: Cyber is set to premiere in January 2015.
