Yesterday, we reported that Cara Delevingne, famous model and occasional drunk person, is rumored to be dating Grammy Award-winning musician Annie Clark, who performs as St. Vincent. The two were spotted being openly affectionate at the 2015 BRIT Awards and then again on the streets of New York yesterday.
We’ve long been fans of St. Vincent and are excited to welcome new fans to the fold. Learn yourself some interesting facts about the acclaimed musician and give a few of her songs a spin below.
1. She Just Won Her First Grammy
In 2014, she released her fourth album, the critically-acclaimed St. Vincent. For that album, she took home the 2015 Grammy for Best Alternative Album. What’s more impressive: she is the first female artist to win that category in more than 20 years! In fact, the last time a woman won that category, it was Sinéad O’Connor in 1991, the year the category was introduced. So slay a bit, Annie!
2. A Major Collaboration
In 2012, Clark teamed up with the legendary David Byrne of Talking Heads to release a collaborative album called Love This Giant. After the album’s release, the pair toured together to much fanfare and acclaim. (Think of this like Lady Gaga teaming up with Tony Bennett, but instead of jazz standards, they wrote and performed brassy, twisted pop.)
Perhaps you think Clark looks familiar though you’re certain you’ve never heard her music. Well, maybe you recognize her from the several episodes of Portlandia on which she guest starred. It was widely rumored that, at the time of filming, Clark was dating Portlandia co-creator Carrie Brownstein.
4. Before She Became St. Vincent
Before she released her debut album, Marry Me, in 2007, Clark was a member of The Polyphonic Spree. You remember them: they had a brief semi-moment in the mid 2000s. (They’re the band that dressed like cult members and numbered accordingly.) She also toured with Sufjan Stevens in 2006.
5. The Beginnings of Things
Her stage name, St. Vincent, comes both from a Nick Cave lyric in the song “There She Goes My Beautiful World” and from her grandmother, whose middle name was St. Vincent. She released her first album in 2007. It was called Marry Me, after a recurring joke from the TV series Arrested Development. Between that fact and her highly-entertaining Twitter feed, she seems to have a pretty good sense of humor.
