The couple decided to get out of town during the difficult time and take their three children —Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3 — to the Bahamas for the Fourth of July weekend, which also happens to fall on their anniversary.
“The family felt it was important to be together and they were together,” a source tells People magazine. “The family is united and, no matter what, will protect the kids.”
They arrived and departed separately. Affleck flew into Baker’s Bay (a secluded private resort community in the Abacos where they own a home) on June 28th while Garner arrived on their wedding anniversary the next day. News of their divorce was announced on June 30.
The two were photographed having a deep discussion together on the beach. Affleck, still wearing his wedding ring, looked distraught as he talked with Garner. Neither smiled throughout the conversation.
“They seemed to be cordial to each other,” an onlooker notes. “They would look at each other and speak and then both look away in silence. A lot of the time, they seemed to just stare off into space.”
Sources say the couple will continue living together when they both arrive back to their home in the Pacific Palisades, Calif. in order to raise their children together.
“These are two people who really tried to save their marriage and worked really hard at it,” another source tells People. “Ultimately they had grown apart and they did what was best for their kids.”
