“It came down to narrative choices,” he explained, adding that Miller was “fantastic” opposite of Depp as real-life gangster Whitey Bulger‘s girlfriend, Catherine Greig.
According to the Cooper, the film will focus more on Bulger’s life before he left Boston as the fugitive’s later years with Greig were “less dramatic.” Aside from Depp, Black Mass also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Adam Scott, Joel Edgerton, and Juno Temple.
The real Greig was lived with Bulger for 16 years and was sentenced to eight years in prison for helping him with his crimes.
Miller, who shot the flick last July while promotingAmerican Sniper, previously said that she had put a lot of work into developing her Boston accent for the project. The 33-year-old even enlisted help from a dialect coach.
“Up until the day before I flew here, I couldn’t do it and it sounded stupid,” she told the Boston Globe. “And I was sort of religiously watching every film ever set in South Boston: Good Will Hunting, Gone Baby Gone, The Town. Catherine had a thick accent, so I hope I do it justice.”
Well, so much for that.
