Hayden Panettiere thinks postpartum depression shouldn’t be off limits for discussion.
“Women need to know that they’re not alone, and that it does heal,” Hayden said when she stopped by to appear on Live! With Kelly and Michael on Monday (Sept. 28, 2015).
Just nine months after giving birth to her daughter Kaya with fiancé Wladimir Klitschko, Hayden decided to open up about the touchy subject of postpartum depression.
“I can very much relate. It’s something a lot of women experience. When [you are told] about postpartum depression you think it’s ‘I feel negative feelings towards my child; I want to injure or hurt my child.’ I’ve never, ever had those feelings. Some women do,”
The new mom went on to say that she thinks it’s something that needs to be talked about, since the subject is somewhat taboo.
“There’s a lot of misunderstanding. There’s a lot of people out there that think that it’s not real, that it’s not true, that it’s something that’s made up in their minds, that ‘Oh, it’s hormones.’ They brush it off. It’s something that’s completely uncontrollable. It’s really painful and it’s really scary and women need a lot of support.”
Oh, and Hayden still has major baby fever. She revealed on the show that she hopes to have four kids with Wladimir, and even wishes it was possible for men to have kids. “If he could, would he?” Kelly Ripa asked, to which Hayden responded, “Absolutely. Absolutely. I asked him this question.”
She also shared a sweet story from her pregnancy, saying that Wladimir would suck his stomach in, and she’d put her baby bump next to him so he could feel what it was like to have the baby so close.
