Selena Gomez is opening up about her battle with Lupus.
Speaking with Billboard, the “Same Old Love” singer finally confirms reports that she had to cancel a part of her 2013 tour due to the inflammatory disease. Explaining that Lupus had sidetracked her career, Gomez, 23, says it was a complex time for her as she was also fighting off tabloid fodder during her hiatus.
“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,” Gomez tells the publication. “I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”
Gomez, who recently revealed she had to go to a therapist to deal with the body-shaming from haters, adds that she channeled her frustrations into her upcoming album, Revival.
“I’m so fucking nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me,” she says. “I’ve been working since I was 7. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story.”
“The hate motivated me,” she continues. “This is my time. I’ve deserved this. I earned it. This is all me.”
While she continually dodges question about ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, Gomez has nothing but nice things to say about BF Taylor Swift. According to the former Disney star, she credits the “Bad Blood” crooner and her infamous #squad for lifting her spirits up.
“Taylor makes me feel empowered, like I can trust new people,” she says. “All of those girls are so dope. We ran around taking pictures, changing dresses, dancing — super-cliche girly stuff, but it rocked. The way she cares about women is so adamant. It’s pulling me out of my shell.”
