Finally, a decoder ring to end them all.
Nicki Minaj is not trying to fool us into thinking she’s engaged to Meek Mill every few months. In fact, it’s all in our heads. Minaj explains to Billboard in a feature interview, prior to the flashy show-don’t-tell of a huge new rock, that her rapper boyfriend wants to give her three rings before they get married. “He and I are not engaged,” she says. “My birthday’s coming up, and he better get the new one, because he got [the first one] for my last birthday.”
Flash forward: Bling bling.
She tells Billboard that she and Mill received exclusive relationship advice from the poster couple of power couples, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, following their Barclays Center show in October. “I love them so much,” she said. “It was just a beautiful conversation to have with people we love and we look up to as a couple. They’re so strong.”
The late-night conversation with Bey-Z ended in a tired case of the giggles.
“It was very late — you know when you get so tired, and it’s just like the giggles portion of the evening?”
She’s in love. She gushes to the magazine about how being in a partnership has ultimately switched up her life. “Everybody should have someone to hold at night,” says Minaj. “It really, really changes your energy.
“It’s just, like, something about love. You transfer it. It’s infectious.”
The 33-year-old looks ahead to the return to her roots as an actor with pre-production for the sitcom about her life well underway. She reveals that she will narrate the episodes like Chris Rock in Everybody Hates Chris, and that she idolizes the acting career of Academy Award winner Meryl Streep. Prior to his commentary of keeping Muslims out of the United States, Minaj believed that following Donald Trump‘s journey through election season would have made for the best reality TV.
Still, she says that she has to “definitely” drop a mixtape in her music’s future to bring her career full circle. “Because I came into the game doing mixtapes, I want to make sure women do not forget the importance of that grind,” explains Minaj. “That walk up to the top. You can’t get there with a song.”
“Fans know my struggle. How hungry I was. That I was not settling, I was not giving up. I was on everybody’s beat. I was ruthless.”
