Eddie Redmayne recently opened up about the toll constantly being connected was taking on him and what he did to change it.
The 34-year-old actor spoke with The Independent recently about the stress and sadness he felt constantly answering texts and emails and phone calls.
His solution? To take a step back.
“I tried switching back to a simple, old-fashioned handset in place of a smartphone,” he said. “It was a reaction against being glued permanently to my iPhone during waking hours. The deluge of emails was constant and I found myself trying to keep up in real time, at the expense of living in the moment.”
Striking that balance with technology is a difficult task for most, let alone an acclaimed, in-demand thespian like Redmayne.
And the actor said it had a real affect on his day-to-day life. “I love the idea of a more analogue phone in theory,” said TheDanish Girl star. “During the day, I felt far more alive.”
Ultimately, Redmayne chose to return to his smartphone, stating that another distraction simply took its place.
“I was tied to my laptop answering emails for two hours first thing every morning and last thing at night instead, which was a different kind of intrusion,” he said. “I wasn’t very popular with [his wife] Hannah, so today I’m back on my iPhone and trying to master a healthier relationship with it.”
