The co-stars pretty much hated each other.
Charlize Theron admitted that she and Tom Hardy really did not get along when they filmed Mad Max: Fury Road. Not only does she say it was a “struggle” to work with him, but she reveals that it showed in the characters. Talking to The Wall Street Journal, the actress said: “Maybe the movie is what it is because we struggled so much with each other, and those characters had to struggle so much with each other. If we were chum-chum, maybe the movie would have been 10 times worse.”
Apparently their rift was due to Hardy’s desire to stay in character between takes. “I’m not saying that they were seething right through, but the trajectory of the characters can’t help but seep into the work,” director George Miller said of the stars. “When they first meet each other, they’re trying to kill each other. As the two characters come together out of necessity and rather reluctantly, they have to find a degree of trust.
However, Theron did have something nice to say about the actor. “From what I hear, he’s not like that on every movie – I hear he’s had good experiences.” The actress revealed to Esquire last year that Hardy sent her a note after filming wrapped, which read: “You are an absolute nightmare, BUT you are also f—ing awesome. I’ll kind of miss you. Love, Tommy.”
We’re glad they kissed and made up. Considering two more Mad Max films are rumored to be in the works, it would probably be a good idea for them to figure out a way to get along.
