At Universal’s presentation at CinemaCon on Wednesday, the studio’s Illumination Entertainment announced that Cumberbatch will lend his vocal talents as the Grinch in an animated redo of the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Set for a November 2017 release date, the movie will expand upon the endearing ’60s animated short to tell the tale of the Grinch who plots to ruin Christmas for the residents of Whoville.
In other Universal news from CinemaCon, it was announced that South Park co-creator Trey Parker will be the new villain in Despicable Me 3. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the character, Balthazar Bratt, is a former child star who is obsessed with the character he played in the ’80s. Steve Carell will also reprise both his main character Gru and Gru’s twin brother in the latest installment. The film is set to bow on June 30, 2017.
