Jessica Alba wasn’t always so comfortable being herself.
The actress, who’s been on numerous “Sexiest Women” lists throughout her career, reveals she was still a virgin when she was being labeled a sex symbol by the industry. Speaking with InStyle, the 35-year-old says she was very “uncomfortable” with being an object of lust at such a young age.
“My sexuality made me very uncomfortable. I remember my first Maxim shoot, they were telling me to pose a certain way, and I was like, ‘Agh! I’m 19. I’m a virgin. I don’t even know how to do that.’ It was so awkward,” she remembers. ” The first time I wore a dress and heels, I had to go to the Golden Globes — I was nominated for Dark Angel. I took my brother. I was so worried about not looking like a lady.”
Alba also admits that she was still having issues with being labeled a sex symbol just 10 years ago. Though she was with now-husband Cash Warren at this time, she didn’t like the idea of being defined just by her looks.
“I sort of went through a life crisis. I was like, ‘This isn’t what I set out to be. I’m so much more than this, but I don’t know how not to be a sex symbol,'” she says, adding that her life started to change after she found out she was pregnant with her eldest daughter, Honor. “It was not planned, but I was like, ‘OK, this is where my life is going. I always wanted to be a mom.'”
Since then, Alba started a billion dollar company by focusing on creating natural and eco-friendly household, baby, and beauty products. According to the mom-of-two, the idea came to her after she broke out in a rash from washing onesies she had received at a baby shower.
“I did not want my kid to be in the hospital all the time like I was,” Alba, who was constantly sick when she was a child, says. “I made a deal with the universe: If I was able to manifest my dreams, then I would try to do good in some way.”
