The Stranger Things actress is coming to the defense of the leading man amid legal battles.
Since Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp, claiming he physically and verbally abused her, numerous celebrities have come forward to defend the actor, including Benicio Del Toro, comedian Doug Stanhope and ex Vanessa Paradis. Now, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor is getting support from an ex-fiancée: Winona Ryder.
“I can only speak from my own experience, which was wildly different than what is being said,” Ryder told Time magazine recently. “He was never, never that way towards me. Never abusive at all towards me. I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves.”
The 44-year-old actress is quick to clarify that she’s not accusing anyone of anything. Only that the violent, drug-and-alcohol-addled aggressor that Heard decries is not the man she remembers. “I wasn’t there. I don’t know what happened. I’m not calling anyone a liar. I’m just saying, it’s difficult and upsetting for me to wrap my head around it.”
Ryder, who met Depp on the set of Edward Scissorhands in 1989, went on to explain that although her romance with the movie star ended long ago, she struggles to believe his behavior would shift so radically.
“Look, it was a long time ago, but we were together for four years, and it was a big relationship for me,” she said. “Imagine if someone you dated when you were—I was 17 when I met him—was accused of that. It’s just shocking. I have never seen him be violent toward a person before.”
