According to Us Weekly, the Duchess of Cambridge had no idea that her younger sister was ready for marriage with hedge fund manager James Matthews. A source told the publication that the news of the proposal, which happened over the weekend while couple was vacationing in the Lake District of northwest England, was “totally unexpected.”
“She had no idea they were getting engaged so soon,” the insider dished.
“Kate is so happy for Pippa,” the source added. “She knows how much this means to her and how much she loves James.”
Pippa, 34, first started dating James, 40, in 2012 following her split from Nico Jackson. After spending some time apart, they rekindled their romance late last year. Since their reconciliation, James got very close to Pippa’s family — even going on holiday with papa Michael Middleton in St. Barts this January.
“They make a wonderful couple and we wish them every happiness together,” Michael told the Associated Press.
Kensington Palace added that Kate and Prince William are “absolutely delighted” by the engagement.
