Gigi Hadid may now have a successful collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger, but that partnership almost didn’t happen because someone from the label thought the model wasn’t skinny enough to show skin on their runway.
Though Tommy Hilfiger himself hails Hadid as the “all-American girl next door with an exotic twist to her look,” he admitted that a colleague didn’t believe in the 21-year-old and opted to cover her body in a loose-fitting number instead to cover her curves.
“Our casting director said, ‘She doesn’t really fit because you know she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin. So they put a red, white and blue poncho on her,” he told Yahoo Style, referring to what Hadid wore at his Fall 2015 runway show.
While the look “covered a lot of her body unfortunately,” Hilfiger said he realized he needed to work with Hadid after her photo got tons of attention and “received millions of hits” online.
“So I said, ‘You know, why don’t we ask her to design a line with us?'” Hilfiger recalled. “I said, ‘Gigi come design this with me, we’ll do a Gigi x Tommy couture line.'”
Given that the two are still working together these days, it’s safe to say that everything is water under the bridge. In a statement provided to Celebuzz, Hilfiger clarified his remarks about Hadid, saying:
Gigi is truly the definition of a “Tommy Girl” — her magnetic personality is bright, confident and always optimistic. I’ve known her for many years, and am extremely proud to have her as the ambassador of my brand and as a collaborator of our collections. Any statement to the contrary is completely false. The headline from the interview with Yahoo was misleading and has since been corrected.
