Jason Derulo Accuses American Airlines of Racial Discrimination

Jason Derulo says that he experienced racial discrimination at a Miami airport when he tried to check in for a flight with American Airlines.

Derulo explained in an Instagram live video that a member of his group tried to check 19 pieces of luggage onto their American Airlines flight out of Miami International Airport. He said that his preferred status as a “concierge key” member entitles him to check an extraordinary amount of bags, but an airline employee still wouldn’t allow him to do so without paying.

Derulo and his party were already on the plane at the time and had pulled away from the gate, but he received a call on his cell phone from the team member that stayed at the desk who said that American Airlines wanted to charge him $6,000 to check the bags. Derulo had to disembark when he was informed about the situation, at which point the pilot allegedly used profane language to force them off the plane. According to the singer, there were 15 police officers waiting for him off the plane.

“If I wasn’t Jason Derulo I wouldn’t be here right now,” said Derulo in the video. “I’d be in f—ing cuffs. It’s 100 percent racial.”

CNN reached out to American Airlines, who provided the following statement on the incident:

“A passenger elected to deplane in order to travel with their checked bags. The passenger was rebooked with his checked bags on a later flight Wednesday evening.”

Miami Dade Police said that there an incident report wasn’t issued because no charges were made.

Derulo first drew attention to the incident through a post on Instagram in which he addressed the airline directly.

“@americanair I spent millions on your airline throughout the past ten years between myself and my entire staff but have still experienced racial discrimination today at miami airport!!!” wrote Derulo in the caption of the photo below. “Called 15 police officers on me as if I’m a criminal! It’s not ok that when you find out who I am the gears change!
F**k that!! I want answers.”
