No matter your age, you know Billy Ray Cyrus’s name. Whether you loved “Achy Breaky Heart,” Hannah Montana, or the instant hit “Old Town Road,” Cyrus is a household name.
We were lucky enough to sit down with the Grammy-winning artist to get the inside scoop on working with Lil Nas X, his new album, and their Super Bowl commercial. Read his exclusive interview!
Billy Ray Cyrus came in like a dark horse (on a dark horse?) in 2019 with “Old Town Road.” The song by him and Lil Nas X became viral on Tik Tok, and now I hear it in every bar I walk into. Cyrus and Lil Nas X won two Grammy awards, which was a first for both artists.
Cyrus has had a very successful career, and it is incredibly interesting to see this country star paired with a 20-year-old rapper. “Lil Nas X, you know, he changed the game for everybody,” Cyrus told Celebuzz!. “He showed a guy like me a whole new world.”
He showed all of us a whole new world, and both men changed the game for genre-bending music. Cyrus said that throughout his career it has always been his goal to make music that is heard around the world, and Lil Nas X represents everything he loves about music.
“When Old Town Road started exploding…I had to take a redeye and go from Vegas…to Miami, to the biggest rap/hip hop festival in the world called Rolling Loud,” he said. It was one of his first performances in front of a hip hop crowd. Coincidentally, he played in the same stadium that this year’s Super Bowl will be held.
As for the success of the record, Cyrus said he’s just being himself.
“I can only speak for myself saying that this is such a niche, such a powerhouse of creativity,” said the singer. “I have people around me who assured me that all I have to do right now is be me…I love it, I love it.”
Cyrus, Lil Nas X, and actor Sam Elliott starred in the new Doritos Cool Ranch Super Bowl commercial, which you can watch above! This was the country artist’s first Super Bowl commercial, and he said he enjoyed every bit of it.
“58-freaking-years-old and I just landed my first Super Bowl commercial,” he joked. “All I had to do was sit on that porch in the costume that they made and play my left-handed guitar and ride the horse up Old Town Road.”
He was starstruck by Elliott, who is also a seasoned professional. “Sam Elliot’s got the charisma and magic that he carries is legendary,” said Cyrus. “It was watching a great superstar master his craft to perfection.”
Cyrus didn’t let a single second of the day go by without enjoying it. “It was like, the greatest day of my life,” he said. “It was just fun, it was an honor to be there.”
