In the Duggar world, divorce is certainly not normal. On 19 Kids & Counting and Counting On, we’ve seen their relationship ups and downs, including some times when divorce seems like it should be considered!
Many fans would agree that Anna Duggar should take the kids and leave Josh Duggar, but they’ve come to realize that will probably never happen. Others think that Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo‘s relationship is headed down the wrong path, but they insist that they’re stronger than ever.
As for Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald, they seemed to be happier than ever! Jessa is currently pregnant with their fourth child, so it’s a shock that these two are the first to be involved in divorce drama. Jessica Seewald, Ben’s sister, has filed for divorce from her husband, Dwight Lester.
At the end of May, Ben’s sister, Jessica Seewald, filed for divorce from her husband, Dwight Lester. The Sun reports that the divorce comes only two years after they married in May 2019.
Katie Joy from Without a Crystal Ball was the first to report on the news. “Jessa Seewald’s sister-in-law Jessica Lester, who appeared on an episode of “say yes to the dress” in 2019, filed for divorce from her husband on May 21,” she shared on Instagram. “Fans had been debating if something was up after Jessica removed all photos of her husband from her Instagram.”
She added that Jessica filed for divorce on May 21, 2021.
We know that divorce isn’t the first choice (or a choice at all) for families like the Duggars and Seewalds, so fans were hoping the cause for divorce wasn’t anything too horrible.
“Good for her! I really wonder what the Seewalds and Jessa/Ben think about this,” one fan wrote on reddit.
“Good for her. I applaud anyone who can admit that their marriage isn’t working and has the good sense to run for the hills,” said another.
“I hope the reason wasn’t anything too awful and her family is supportive of her through this. Wonder how Jessa and Ben feel,” added a third.
Jessica often does not follow her family’s strict code, so it isn’t too shocking that she’s the first to break the no-divorce tradition. She’s an Arkansas cop and does not abide by the traditional modest dress codes.
But now, we’ve learned more about why Jessica has decided to file for divorce. Initially, we assumed it must be something pretty serious since divorce is so taboo in their world, and now it looks like we might have been right.
According to the divorce filing, the couple officially split on April 16, 2021.
Jessica claims her ex subjected her to “personal indignities destroying the legitimate ends of the marriage such that the Plaintiff can no longer reside with the Defendant as man and wife.”
Under Arkansas law, a “personal indignity” could be anything pertaining to “rudeness, hate, abuse, and neglect” toward a spouse.
Jessica has requested that her maiden name of Seewald be restored, and luckily, the couple has no children together.
In Dwight’s response to the filing, he “admits all of the allegations contained” in Jessica’s divorce filing.
