Dr. Sandra Lee, known to many as Dr. Pimple Popper, is taking her dermatology expertise to the next level! Her new skincare line, SLMD, is made with your skin in mind, and delivers prescription quality acne care over the counter.
She sat down with Celebuzz! in an exclusive interview and gave us some amazing skincare tips. Keep reading for the entire interview!
You either love watching Dr. Pimple Popper videos or you hate them, but we’ve all see Dr. Sandra Lee’s Instagram account one way or another. The dermatologist now has her own show on TLC, and is bringing affordable and effective skincare to you! She’s a superhero when it comes to treating our worst acne nightmares, and we loved picking her brain for tips to keep our skin healthy and clear.
But first, we had to know why she thought sharing pimple popping videos was something she should do in the first place!
“It sort of happened by accident…I started Instagram in late 2014, trying to show a little of my world as a dermatologist, and early on I had to show the blackhead extractions. We don’t even really do them…people don’t really want to pay to have those done by a dermatologist,” she said.
So Dr. Lee decided that blackhead extractions would be good to share on Instagram because they’re something that can easily be done at home.
“Low and behold it got all this attention, I thought it was really weird. People were saying like, ‘Oh my gosh that’s amazing’ and then they were tagging their friends. And I thought, ‘Ok, something’s going on there, let me try this again.’”
She started posting more, and more people were paying attention, and that’s when she realized there was a “subculture” of people who enjoyed pimple popping videos. They either loved the videos or absolutely hated them, but they were sharing either way!
“I thought that was pretty crazy,” said Dr. Lee. “And I also thought I could be their queen.”
And a queen she has honestly become! Her new skincare line SLMD is all about giving everyone access to high-quality skincare, regardless if they’re able to make a trip to the dermatologist’s office. So what sets SLMD apart from all the other acne products out there?
“First of all, we came about it really differently…a large majority of the population doesn’t see dermatologists, they don’t have the money, they don’t have insurance, they don’t have the time,” Dr. Lee said. “So I realized I had this opportunity to not only entertain them but educate them at the same time.”
Through her platforms, Dr. Lee said she is able to educate fans and viewers on about different treatment options, why they work, and how they can work for them. She said it has really encouraged people to try new products and use them correctly since they now know the science behind it.
“I wouldn’t necessarily have expected such a great outcome [from the line],” she confessed. “I knew these products worked, but as a dermatologist I gave stronger things, I gave prescription strength, and I was taught that you really need those prescriptions, but that’s not really true.”
Over-the-counter products can really work just as well if you use them correctly!
But since there’s endless options for skincare, we had to ask what she thinks about celebrities and non-medical professionals who are trying to get into the game (a la KylieSkin).
“I see the draw there…when people want to do everything you do, it makes sense to create a lot of things,” said Dr. Lee. What she dislikes about many of the skincare products out there is that they aren’t medically based.
“I don’t go to some remote island that only grows this one rare berry where I have to squeeze it with my toes to get the juice out that is going to have some magical potion. Mine is from training as a dermatologist, what we know works, and what has been proven scientifically to work.”
