Last week, Glee star Naya Rivera went missing while renting a boat with her 4-year old son. When the rental boat company noticed that the actress was late to return, they went out to locate the pair and found the boat floating in the water with only her young son aboard.
Rivera’s body was found in the lake on Monday, July 13th. Her former Glee co-stars paid tribute to the life of their beloved castmate, both in person and on social media.
Glee star Naya Rivera went missing last Wednesday after renting a boat with her son. Numerous diving teams and other search and rescue workers began looking for Rivera last Thursday, with approximately 100 people working to recover the missing actress. Unfortunately, Lake Piru’s poor visibility made it extremely difficult to locate the actress.
The lake is not a natural lake, so there are trees and other sediments in the water that make it difficult to navigate. On Friday, search teams chose to replace human divers with sonar equipment to help with the difficulties. One diver said they only had a visibility of one or two feet, which made it difficult to dig through tree branches and brush on the bottom of the lake.
By Sunday, search teams were focused on the surrounding areas, including cabins, outbuildings, and areas on the shoreline. The hope was that she had made it out of the water on her own.
“Anytime we do a search like this we look at all the possibilities, but the highest probability, based on the evidence we have, is that she went in the water and did not come out,” said Captain Eric Buschow of the Ventura County’s Sheriff’s Department, reports the Los Angeles Times.
By yesterday morning, search and rescue operations were scaled back, but thankfully at 9:30 am a body was recovered. It was unclear whether or not it was Rivera, but the sheriff’s department has confirmed that they are “confident” it is her.
In an unfortunate twist of fate, Rivera’s body was found on the anniversary of Cory Monteith’s death in 2013. Now, former Glee stars are breaking their silence on the death of their castmate and celebrating her life.
“Rest sweet, Naya. What a force you were. Love and peace to your family,” Jane Lynch tweeted. Chris Colfer, who played Kurt on the show, shared an Instagram post of the two of them when they were first starting out.
How can you convey all your love and respect for someone in one post? How can you summarize a decade of friendship and laughter with words alone? If you were friends with Naya Rivera, you simply can’t. Her brilliance and humor were unmatched. Her beauty and talent were otherworldly. She spoke truth to power with poise and fearlessness. She could turn a bad day into a great day with a single remark. She inspired and uplifted people without even trying. Being close to her was both a badge of honor and a suit of armor. Naya was truly one of a kind, and she always will be.
Sending all my love to her wonderful family and her beautiful son.
