Erika Jayne and her husband Tom Girardi have decided to call it quits after a whopping 21 years of marriage. The couple, whose 33-year age gap has been a controversial topic, married in 1999.
In her statement yesterday, Erika was asking for privacy and appeared confident this was an amicable split, but we’ve learned that might not be so true! The reason behind the divorce has been revealed, and it will seriously shock you…
To recap, yesterday Erika Jayne announced that she is filing for divorce from Tom Girardi. E! News broke the news this afternoon, and we were left with a lot of questions.
“After much consideration, I have decided to end my marriage to Tom Girardi,” the reality star told E!. “This is not a step taken lightly or easily. I have great love and respect for Tom and for our years and the lives we built together.”
She continued to explain how she and her now-ex plan to move forward.
“It is my absolute wish to proceed through this process with respect and with the privacy that both Tom and I deserved,” Erika added. “I request others give us that privacy as well.”
The couple met in 1999 while Erika was waitressing in West Hollywood. Tom was a frequent patron of the establishment and eventually slipped her his number. They got engaged only six months after their initial meeting.
Many people question the couple’s age gap, Erika is now 49 and Tom is 81. “I’ve dealt with this forever: the younger woman that married the wealthier, older man,” Erika said on an episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. “I mean, I’m tired of having to justify my 20-year marriage. Go get a 20-year marriage, then come f*cking talk to me.”
Another thing that shocked friends and fans alike was that Tom never wore a wedding ring.
“Tom said, ‘Listen, I’ll buy you anything you want. I don’t care what it is. You name it. But I’m not wearing a wedding band. I never have, I never will,” Erika explained in her memoir. “I don’t like it. It’s uncomfortable. Please don’t ask me to. A wedding band does not have magical powers. It is not going to stop anyone from doing something.”
Erika also told Andy Cohen back in 2017 that she does not have a prenup, which may make things difficult with future divorce proceedings.
“Let me tell you something, let me be very clear. I’m married to a very powerful lawyer,” Erika told the Watch What Happens Live host. “A prenup wouldn’t stand in his way anyway…It’s gonna be all Tom’s way, I assure you. He’ll rip that piece of paper to shreds in two seconds!”
