The chief stew may be turning in her epaulets! We’ve been teased about it all season, but the reason behind Kate Chastain‘s departure on Below Deck is finally revealed. Fans of the show are used to walk-offs and mid-season firings, but usually, that doesn’t involve one of the main characters (I mean, just imagine if Captain Lee walked off the boat…).
So what (or who) drove Kate to dry land?
We’ve been with Kate Chastain and Captain Lee from the beginning, but this charter season may have been too much for Kate!
Fans can remember countless fights between the chief stew and chefs, deckhands, and her own cabin crew. Some pushed others to turn in their resignation, or prompt the Captain to give them the boot, but none caused Kate to head for dry land. There’s something in the water this season, and Kate doesn’t like it one bit.
Bravo has been teasing this walk-off all season, and now we know what happened. At BravoCon in early November, Kate told ET, “It’s a mother effin walk off!”
“I get very frustrated and it takes me a while to get that frustrated,” she continued.
Kate and the chef, Kevin Dobson, have not been seeing eye to eye the entire season, but it looks like other members of the crew started to get under her skin as well!
Back in October, Kate told Decider that she had to ask the camera crew to stop filming two separate times. She then revealed the drama is what finally got to her.
“This season there’s more drama than most seasons, I think. I didn’t realize it until looking back and saying, ‘Oh my gosh, that happened and that happened,’” Kate said in an interview with The Daily Dish. “And it just got to a point where I felt like the people I was working with were too disrespectful and too much, and I wanted to be out of that situation.”
She then admitted that this isn’t her style. “Yeah, I’ve never jumped ship in six seasons, and there have been plenty of situations where it would have been great,” she explained.
And apparently Captain Lee was clueless until the incident occurred. “I just wanted to know where my coffee was,” he said in an interview. “That’s the first I heard about it when my coffee didn’t show up in the morning. I didn’t know. So I didn’t really have a thought. They said, ‘Kate’s not here.’ I said, ‘No, forget about that. That’s not right.’”
Captain Lee admitted that he was just as surprised as everyone else, and even he wants to stay away from whatever caused Kate to react so extremely.
In the clip, the bosun Ashton Pienaar blows up at Kate. “Everybody feels that way about you, Kate!” he exclaims.
“OK, great. Go find another chief stew. I quit,” Kate said before literally walking off the boat.
So will this be Kate’s last season?
